
Plaster Rock to host Western Valley games


Plaster Rock will host this year's Western Valley Regional Games and organizers are looking for volunteers. The games will be held from July 16-18 and more than 300 youth are expected to attend.
"We're going to need some volunteers to help with this three-day event," John Sharkey, director of parks and lifestyle services, noted in his report to village council on April 21.
This is the 26th annual edition of the games and it promotes the enjoyment of sports, active living and friendship for youths from Nackawic to Plaster Rock."
Nomination forms are available in all western valley communities for Coach of the Year, Volunteer Leader of the Year and the Builder's award. The awards will be presented at the 11th annual Center of Coaching Education Awards Banquet on May 29 at the Florenceville Curling Club. Residents from Plaster Rock to Nackawic are encouraged to nominate someone from their community. Nomination forms can be picked up at the village office or recreation department office.
A ball hockey program for youth started at the Tobique-Plex. Youths play on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Adult ball hockey for those 18 and over will be played on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Friday evening roller blade fun started at the Tobique-Plex on April 25 and will continue every week from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Mullin's Furniture Store will hold a giant sale at the Tobique-Plex starting on May 26. The Plaster Rock and District Fire Department will hold a dance at the Tobique-Plex on Saturday, May 10 with music provided by the Hardcore Troubadours.
A Seniors' Fair sponsored by the federal government and Mike Allen, MP for Tobique-Mactaquac, will be held at the Tobique-Plex on May 21. There will be 35 booths including one for passport help, Service New Brunswick and Service Canada as well as health and physical activity sites, music and five 30-minute presentations.
Work will begin in early May to get the Plaster Rock Tourist Park ready for the season. Work will include cleaning up the trails and public areas, repairing washrooms and getting the swimming pool and tennis courts ready for use.
The Summer Fun Park program for children will be held from June 30 to mid-August. The recreation department is looking for volunteers for minor baseball, minor soccer and tennis.
