Storm couldn't hold back minor hockey playoffs

SV won District 2 PeeWee banner
Year-end minor hockey playoffs pretty much had Victoria and northern Carleton Counties covered last weekend when, in spite of the huge snowstorm, the year-end playoffs for Districts 1 and 2 took place in four locations.
The PeeWee Competitive B playoffs, hosted by the Southern Victoria Minor Hockey Association, took place March 21-23 at River Valley Civic Centre in Perth-Andover and saw the Division 1 crown go to St. Quentin-Kedgewick who, in the championship game Easter Sunday, edged out Grand Falls PeeWees in overtime by a score of 2-1.
The host team's Division 2 had Tobique Valley and Southern Victoria PeeWees facing off against each other early Sunday evening when SV came out 8-2 winners to take the 2008 banner.
Interviewed Monday morning, SV Minor Hockey President Brett Sprague said the year-end district tournaments meant a huge amount of work and generosity by the players' parents and by local businesses.
"The parents hosted the tournament, spending their Easter weekend at the arena," he said. "They had asked the SVHS Class of 2008 to take care of the time clock and score keeping and used the money they made on the 50/50 draws and used it to donate to Safe grad which received $405. Joe and Tammy MacPhail, for example, parents of players, each won the 50/50 and donated their winnings back to the Safe Grad. We also had great sponsors - Subway, Pizza Shack, Save-Easy, Everett's Heating, Bodin's Crafts, Intersport, Chris Waugh, and Checkers, and a special thanks to the arena staff."
Sprague said that although the huge storm caused problems, the tournaments went on.
"The storm played havoc on Friday, all across our districts. There were tournaments here, in Plaster Rock, Florenceville, and Woodstock. We had parents and teams going everywhere. They were great."
