A single-vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer closed off a section of the Trans Canada Highway north of Grand Falls on Sunday, April 27. The truck, owned by G.M. Rioux and Son Ltd. of Grand Falls, was transporting potatoes when its driver lost control of the vehicle which left the roadway and struck the guardrail. It snapped off a section of the guardrail and its support posts before flipping over onto its side and into the ditch. The driver was taken by ambulance to the General Hospital and released a short time later. The truck and its trailer sustained thousands of dollars in damages. Members of the St. André Fire Department as well as the RCMP attended the scene. Firemen used a mixture of water and foam to quickly extinguish a small fire. They used peat moss to absorb diesel fuel which had spilled from a ruptured tank. Traffic was rerouted until later in the afternoon when the scene was cleared of debris.
