In a news release, CSC said a package of this contraband and unauthorized items had an estimated institutional value of $54,000.

“The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions,” the news release said. “These tools include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors.”

Visitors to federal penitentiaries are subject to searches before entering.

“CSC is heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions,” the news release said.

The CSC has a toll-free number, 1-866-780-3784, for the public to provide tips on activities related to security at its institutions.

The Dorchester Penitentiary is approximately 40 kilometres southeast of Moncton.
