Grand Falls Town Police have issued a warning to residents pertaining to a 90# telephone number scam.

Police Chief Jean-Réal Michaud explained the scam as follows. “When you answer your phone, an individual identifies himself as a Telus serviceman who is conducting a test on the telephone lines. He adds that to complete the test, you should touch nine (9), zero (0), the pound sign (#) and then hang up,” stated Michaud.

“Luckily, many people who have received this call elsewhere in the province have been suspicious and refused the request. This happened in the Edmundston area recently and its police force advised us that the scam may be coming to our area,” Michaud added.

“Upon contacting the telephone company, clients were told that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables him to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number. This same scam has been originating from many local jails and prisons,” Michaud stated.
