After two mandates as a Grand Falls Town Councillor, Gildard Lavoie now wants to serve his community as its next mayor. Lavoie is one of two candidates for the position in the upcoming May 12 municipal elections.

Lavoie feels that his experience as a councillor, as well as a member of various committees and acting as a representative on regional and provincial associations has given him the "knowledge to see and understand not only the municipal government but the importance that a mayor with his council should be integrated with the people. My priorities will be to hear people, communicate and be transparent in our decisions," he said.

"The challenge to be mayor will not be limited to my experience as a councillor. I will bring to the position my experience and involvement on different committees within the community, my experience as general manager for 23 years in a credit union and now seven years of self-employment in the accounting and consulting fields," he added.

"I believe that I have a good knowledge, competency, experience plus a live interest for the development of our region," Lavoie stated. "I want to assure everyone that I plan on continuing the work on projects which are already on the go such as the new civic centre and manor. I would like to conclude the feasibility study related to our municipal police force and after analysis of its conclusions, communicate these to the population after which we will be in a better position to determine which option will better serve the needs of our community, while taking into account the services which will be offered and the associated costs."

"I would like to see the continuation of the initiative which would see the province complete the highway extension from Madawaska Road to the Ron Turcotte bridge; develop partnership options on a host of projects with our neighbours, Drummond and St. André, while respecting the identity and autonomy of these communities, in the areas of fire protection, recreation, security, industrial park, etc. I would like to develop and improve tourism services, support small and medium-size businesses while welcoming new businesses and residents. I would also like efforts to be made to involve our youth in various projects aimed at building a future for our region," Lavoie stated.

"Other projects should be undertaken as partnerships, with development and involvement of the people of our community. It will be my pleasure to work with citizens to offer them quality services, always within our financial capacities to pay," he said.
