Victoria County SPCA pets of the week
Published Wednesday September 3rd, 2008

Things are straightforward when they’re in black and white, just like a pair of lovable cats at the Victoria County SPCA animal shelter in Arthurette. The cats are the Pets of the Week and they are looking for a good, kind home.
The sibling felines are spayed and about oneyear- old. They are declawed on all four feet and need only their vaccinations to bring their health care up to date. As they have been together throughout their lives, the SPCA wants the cats to be adopted as a pair. The black and white cats differ slightly in their markings and although one is a little more outgoing than the other, they are both affectionate and friendly.
The shelter has experienced some good adoptions recently with some kittens and a cat in the process of going to new homes.
As fall approaches, the SPCA is reminding pet owners to be on the lookout for fleas and other parasites as dogs and cats start spending more time indoors. Whether conditions have been favourable for fleas this summer and dogs and cats can easily bring the annoying hitchhikers inside with them.
The most reliable products to rid pets of parasites are available from veterinarians.
The shelter is once again open to the public following a period of partial closure due to concerns over the possible presence of the dog disease parvovirus. This often fatal disease is almost always present in the local area and outbreaks can only be prevented by pet owners ensuring their dogs are vaccinated on an annual basis. Puppies are particularly vulnerable and should always be vaccinated at the recommended ages.
The SPCA has held several yard sales in Plaster Rock over the summer and financial reports from the latest efforts will be included in the next column.
Needs at the shelter include cleaning supplies, dish soap and laundry detergent. The shelter is still using wood stove pellets as cat litter as they are more affordable and more environmentally friendly than traditional litter. Donations of bags of pellets are appreciated. Other needs include paper towels, facial tissues, toilet tissue, photocopier paper and pens. Canned pet food is also required.
The Victoria County SPCA can be reached at 356-1117 or 2238 Route 109, Arthurette, NB, E7H 4C2.
