Heritage Fair winners are headed to Victoria, B.C., for national fair

Two valley students are on their way to the National Historica Fair in Victoria, B.C. Rory MacDonald of Florenceville Middle School and Samantha Howard of Perth-Andover Middle School were chosen Monday, May 5, to represent the region on the national level.
Both advanced from the Regional Heritage Fair hosted by School District 14 at the NBCC Woodstock campus on May 5. Nine schools, ranging from Edmundston to Nackawic participated, with over 50 projects on display.
Along with MacDonald and Howard, 11 other projects were awarded trophies and plaques for the students to take back to their schools and put on display.
The New Brunswick Historic Places Award, sponsored by the province's Heritage branch, was presented to Morgan McCarthy of Andover Elementary School.
The New Brunswick St. Croix 2004 Award, sponsored by the province's Intergovernmental Affairs branch, was awarded to Tiara Sappier of Andover Elementary School.
The trio of Lorna Sullivan, Shelby Shaw and Meredith Tingley from Florenceville Middle School won the New Brunswick Museum Award of Merit, sponsored by the New Brunswick Museum.
The HBC Explorers Award, sponsored by the HBC Company, went to Mark Booth of Andover Elementary School.
The Nancy's Award, sponsored by the New Brunswick Advisory Council on the Status of Women, was awarded to Kasey Dionne of Andover Elementary School.
The RBC Foundation Award for the Celebration of Aboriginal Heritage was presented to Sean Rowley of Woodstock Middle School.
Debec Elementary School student Savannah Sherwood took home the Archival Award of New Brunswick, sponsored by the Council of Archives New Brunswick.
The 2008 East Coast Music Spirit Award was awarded to Drew Fox and Kathryn Boyd of Woodstock Middle School.
The Sport Legacy Award, sponsored by the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, was awarded to Bryton MacIntosh and Brandon Fraser of Nackawic Middle School.
The Two-Tongues Award, sponsored by the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages for New Brunswick, went to Lauren Titus and Morgyn Eccelston-Malm from Perth-Andover Middle School.
The Honourable Laurier L. LaPierre Award O.C. Medal, sponsored by the Historica Foundation, was presented to Hilary Kennedy and Jared Parson of Perth-Andover Middle School.
The 13 projects that won will be featured in the Provincial Heritage Fair showcase at the Metepenagiag Heritage Park in Red Bank on May 21 to June 11.
Beverley Jacobson, regional heritage fair co-ordinator for School District 14, said the general public is invited to attend the provincial showcase on Sunday, May 25 beginning at 12 p.m.
The two national winners will attend the National Historica Fair in B.C. on July 7 to the 14.
"The National Fair is a truly national event that inspires lasting memories and new friendships," explained Jacobson."It creates and strengthens connections between Canadians.
"Students representing all provinces and territories take part in a special week of sightseeing, historic tours, hands-on workshops and special events. The National Fair is a unique opportunity for students to learn about a specific region of Canada and to interact and establish friendships with young people from a diversity of backgrounds. It is a week-long history camp."
