A few steps here, a few steps there and the Tobique Lions Club annual walkathon will reach its destination. Although there are several separate walkathons held in support of the Lions in Plaster Rock, everyone is joined in a common cause.

We go hand in hand: The Tobique Lions Club annual walkathon was held at Donald Fraser Memorial School on Tuesday, May 6. The club splits funds raised 50-50 with the school and DFMS will use its portion to support its breakfast program. The Lions held its public walkathon on May 3 although other participating groups have chosen alternate dates to do their walking. Funds raised should be tallied by the end of the month and Lions will use the proceeds for scholarships presented annually at Tobique Valley High School.

Signs of spring: What says spring better than bright sunny dandelions and the Tobique Lions Club annual walkathon? Children at Donald Fraser Memorial School were enjoying the warm sunshine as they took part in their leg of the walkathon on Tuesday, May 6 in Plaster Rock.

The Lions Club splits funds raised 50-50 with anyone walking for a group, team or organization. This arrangement gives individuals the opportunity to raise money for a variety of ventures while also providing funds for the Lions.

The public walkathon was held on Saturday, May 3 and although there were only five participants, they raised more than $700. Lion Howard Aiton said he was impressed with that total and is hopeful that by the end of the month, the club will have a complete picture of funds raised.

"The (594 Tobique Valley Royal Canadian Air) cadets did their own walk and we have a youth group walking on the following Saturday," Lion Aiton explained. "The (Italy) travel club is going to be walking after the 16th."

Donald Fraser Memorial School held its leg of the walkathon on Tuesday, May 6 and their portion of funds raised will go towards the school breakfast program. Lion Aiton noted he appreciates the support Lions receive from the school. He added the Lions portion of walkathon funds will go towards the two scholarships that are presented annually at Tobique Valley High School.

"So these young students that are walking will eventually be the ones to benefit from the continuation of those scholarships," Lion Aiton acknowledged.

When all the walkathons are complete, the Lions Club will enter participants' names into a draw for four prizes.
