Midget A team goes on to provincial championship

For a third consecutive year, the Grand Falls J.C. Steel Building Ltd. Midget A hockey team will be going to the provincial championship which will be held in Moncton March 27-31. However, this year, they will defend their provincial Division B title against Division A teams.

During round robin play this season, coach Daniel Nowlan’s squad ended their regular season of play in second place behind the Bathurst team. The Midget A team won two out of its three games against the Fredericton Red Wings and the Renous teams.

Its players had a strong start which led to a 5-1 win over the Fredericton Red Wings in Midget A hockey action at the Grand Falls Stadium on Thursday, March 20.

Joel Bellefleur scored the winning team’s first goal at 1:04 of the first period, on an assist from Philippe Nowlan. Teammate Kevin Cyr’s goal was scored at 14:50, on assists from Nathan Hansen and Nicholas Sirois.

The Midget team’s third and fourth goals were scored in the second period off the sticks of André Lafrance, assisted by Tyler McConnell, at 4:56 and Mark Bellefleur, assisted by André Lafrance, at 7:07. The Red Hawks sole goal was scored by Travis Gahan at 8:33 in the 2nd period, on an assist from Josh Fenety.

The Midgets’ Joel Bellefleur scored the Grand Falls squad’s fifth and winning goal at 6:51 in the 3rd period, with assists from André Lafrance and Philippe Nowlan.

The next day, the team travelled to Fredericton where they chalked up a 6-2 win over the Red Wings. Scorers for the Grand Falls team included André Lafrance (two goals), Dave Clavette, Eric Bernier, Tyler McConnell and Nicholas Sirois.
