Dear Editor,

The Order of Canada was established in 1967 as the country's highest civilian honour. It is supposed to exemplify the motto "desiderantes meliorem patriam", meaning "those who desire a better country." The government of Canada has decided that Dr. Henry Morgentaler deserves our nation's highest honour and made the announcement on Canada Day! By this action, our nation has been diminished.

I cannot agree with the Daily Gleaner Editor's comment on July 4th that honouring Morgentaler in this way "…ought to be viewed as a separate issue from the abortion debate". Apparently, in Canada, the sole purpose of Morgentaler's career has been to change Canadian law so that he and others may legally end the lives of unborn Canadians. Unfortunately, in that he has succeeded at this time. That is his sole claim to Canadian fame and so cannot "be viewed as a separate issue from the abortion debate." It is the sole issue upon which some misguided government officials decided to award him the Order of Canada.

A community's worth is measured by the way it treats the most vulnerable, and no one in Canada is more vulnerable than an unborn Canadian child. This award must not stand.

On behalf of the more then 14,100 members of the New Brunswick Knights of Columbus and the 230,000 Knights Canada wide, I ask all people of good will to join us in writing, phoning or e-mailing the Governor-General, the Prime Minister and your Member of Parliament to ask that this action be revoked.
