Letter to the editor | Don't bully NB smokers

Dear editor,
Health Minister Mike Murphy needs to enter a smoking cessation program. Stop blowing smoke about banning cigarette smoking in vehicles with minors!
Two things: 1) It seems that Murphy skipped school the day they talked about saying no to peer pressure. 2) Kenneth Maybee (President and CEO NB Lung Association) deserves a time out to show we take a stance against bullies like him. Regrettable that for padding resumes, crusades against supposed public demons are formed. In this case, it's bullying smokers.
If the Liberals really wanted to do something for the health of minors, they would make it illegal for pregnant women to consume alcohol as it causes Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. But why would they do something like that, considering it nets Finance Minister Boudreau, $167 Million via NBCL?
While we're talking about "saving the children," we should mandate winter tires on cars and driving at 20 km/h. Kill the moose population that like getting caught in our headlights. Why aren't we banning smoking in houses too? This shouldn't be a matter of needing legislation. If a child feels they've been wronged, sue for child endangerment!
As much as smokers are a drain on healthcare, there are positives to their habit; they don't collect much CPP as they tend to die off sooner. If we want to speak of drain, senior folks living past 70 are a problem. Maybe we should mandate euthanasia to solve this issue.
I'm sure, in time we'll need to be licensed to have a child, similar to the process one goes through before being able to adopt.
We are on the road to serfdom, giving up liberties in the name of safety. We shouldn't follow in NS ignorant footsteps, doing so will only prove TS Elliot right, "this is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but a whimper."

I appreciate a good rant.
You have some GREAT lines in there!
It would be nice if people weren't stupid enough to smoke in a car with children in it, just as it would be niuce if they weren't stupid enough to drive all winter without winter tires. Unfortunately, the laws are created for stupid people.
While this law infringes on rights, it does provide some guidance for the stupid people, and may get them to do the right thing. The laws for drinking and driving decrease teh number of drunks on the road.
This law will do more good than harm, but in a Utopian society, it and many other laws would not be needed.
