Dear editor,

In response to a comment made by the Conservative MP for Tobique– Mactaquac, Mike Allen, on Feb. 21, I want to reiterate my support for the student employment program.

According to Mr. Allen, the riding of Madawaska–Restigouche received too much money for student employment in 2007 and we, the people of Madawaska–Restigouche, will have to accept a reduction in funding from $894,000 to $491,000 without a word.

Mr. Allen should understand that the $894,000 we received in 2007 was based on our riding’s situation and needs. In fact, because of our pressure tactics, the Conservative government agreed to provide a second round of funding to meet our needs.

I encourage Mr. Allen to defend the interests of his constituents, students and organizations rather than silently agree to a funding reduction of 45 per cent. Perhaps it is Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s wish to not defend his constituents, but it is certainly not mine.

Jean-Claude D’Amours,

MP Madawaska–Restigouche
