Organizer Keith Bubar said the show is held annually around the Maritimes to promote the Angus breed in the region.

"It was New Brunswick's turn in the rotation to have the event this year," he said.

"It took us about three weeks to put this together," he added.

Competitors in the show ranged from five years old all the way up to 20, garnering their fair share of prizes for their Angus entrants.

Asked what he thought of his medal for first place in PeeWee Showmanship, Zion-Juhmal Moffit said, "I like it," then scampered off with his friend Dakota Nelson to play on the haystacks.

The judge for the event was the President of the Canadian Angus Beef Association, Bob Switzer.

He was impressed by the calibre of the animals in the show saying, "the Angus breed in the Maritimes is very sound, strong and healthy."

The show ran until 3 p.m. when everyone put down their ribbons and trophies to enjoy delicious barbecued Angus beef steaks and strawberry shortcake.

During the field day, area 4-H members Ashley Black and Ben Alward claimed top honours in the crossbred heifer class. Black of Bloomfield has the champion crossbred, while Alward of Riceville showed the reserve champion crossbred.

The Saturday afternoon show of yearling Angus and Angus cross heifers by junior members of the Angus Association saw 16 heifers entered in the show. Twenty young people participated in the showmanship classes.

Grand champion purebred heifer was shown by Justin Ford of Wheatley River, P.E.I., and the reserve heifer was shown by Andrew Dixon of Cornwall, P.E.I. In total, there were four heifers from N.S., seven from P.E.I. and five from N.B.

The champion senior showman was Andrew Dixon of P.E.I. and the champion junior showman was Logan Ford, also of P.E.I. In the pee wee class of 6 year olds, the judge deemed the two entrants of equal merit and Zion Moffitt of N.B. and Dakota Nelson of N.S. were awarded medallions for a tie placing.

Following the show there was a semen auction of semen donated by Angus breeders from all across Canada. All monies raised from this auction will be divided equally among all junior participants.

Following the junior activities the 2008 Maritime Commercial Angus breeder award was presented. Receiving the award for 2008 were Dale Black and wife Lisa and daughters Megan and Ashley of Bloomfield. They received the CO-OP Atlantic Tender Beef Classic perpetual trophy, the Farm Focus keeper plaque and monogrammed jackets from the Maritime Angus Association.

"All in all it was a very successful Maritime Angus Field Day and Junior Show and the host farm, Keith Bubar and family, provided an excellent site for the event and went the extra mile of providing the meat for both the lunch and supper meal," said Betty Lou Scott, Maritime Angus secretary-treasurer. "In addition, they gave each participating junior a monogrammed camp chair as a keepsake of their participation in the 2008 show."
