The provincial organization believes this easy-to-use reference tool is a first on the Canadian animal welfare scene. Written to assist frontline workers, New Brunswick’s SPCA Animal Protection Officers and shelter staff will be able to quickly refer to the 36-page guide while carrying out their roles. It was designed to make getting information and resources a little easier, while helping them provide timely information to the public.

“Several organizations are involved in helping animals across New Brunswick and, for the first time, we now all have a tool that helps us communicate with one another,” said Brad Horncastle, President of the New Brunswick SPCA.

The directory is one of a handful of new tools the provincial SPCA is using to strengthen its ties with like-minded organizations. The SPCA is sharing this information with other communities such as emergency services, justice, and tourism, interested in animal welfare.

The directory is available for download at the www.spca-nb.ca web site.

“Being a volunteer with the Victoria County SPCA years ago, and with the provincial SPCA this last year, showed just what a need there was for this type of resource,” said directory editor Vanessa Packman. “We have brought together a lot of information that until now has been scattered. It gives us a frame to build on, and a format flexible enough to grow as needs require. It’s just one of several exciting new tools we are creating to better serve New Brunswick’s animal residents.”

The New Brunswick SPCA will be sharing this new guide with its Canadian colleagues when New Brunswick hosts the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies Annual General Meeting and Animal Welfare Conference in Fredericton, May 1-5.

The New Brunswick SPCA was created in 1881 and is responsible for the enforcement of the SPCA Act in New Brunswick. In 2007, its Animal Protection Officers investigated more than 2000 complaints of animal cruelty and neglect.
