The Odour of Canada

Any doubt Beverley McLachlin et al on the Order of Canada nominating committee are pushing an agenda when nominating people for the Order of Canada was put to rest when I read this.

Whether you think Henry Morgentaler is a monster, a hero or something inbetween, one would be hard pressed to find someone who thinks he isn't one of the most controversial living Canadians. Yet "too controversial" is apparently a criteria for not getting named.

Frankly I could care less if Morgentaler gets it or doesn't. The controversy has once again brought the abortion issue to the forefront and forced people to talk about it. That's all good.

However it is time for a little more openess about what the criteria for the Order of Canada is. On the surface it is apparently whatever McLachlin and her elitist friends want it to be.

There is nothing in that article other than hearsay (to quote "Finlay says the Order told her it had turned Somerville down because she's controversial") and a reference to a Globe article. We all know that the Globe has no biases so any secondhand statement about one of their articles must be taken as 100% fact.

Somerville is against equal rights and if you read any of her writings, she not only opposes gay marriage but any marriage not designed to produce children. To quote her, marriage "marks out the
relationship of two people who will together transmit human life to the next generation", so unless you're procreating don't invite her to your wedding.

As for her opposition to abortion, I won't go there because it is a divisive issue in which neither side can be swayed to accept the other's position.

Morgentaler meets the criteria for the Order; Somerville does not. Both are tireless crusaders, but one is for granting rights while the other is for denying them.

Why don't the Irvings give back their orders if this decision is so repugnant to them?

Put some spine in your actions, corporate kleptocrats - don't make your deluded sycophants do your dirty work.
