Fears of violence unfounded as protesters peacefully march in Mtl North

MONTREAL - Protesters calling for a public inquiry into the death of Fredy Villanueva marched peacefully through Montreal's north-end Saturday.

About 600 marchers demanded an end to racial profiling, police brutality and measures to improve people's lives in the overwhelmingly poor section of the city.

Police were bracing for trouble as one of the march organizers was a member of anti-police brutality group previously linked to violent protests.

But marchers heeded the request for calm and there was a heavy police presence.

Villanueva, 18, was shot and killed by Montreal police on Aug. 9, sparking a night of rioting and violence in the neighbourhood.

The march was attended by members of the Villanueva family as well as the family of Quilem Registre, who died after being tasered by Montreal police last fall.
