This year's Perth-Andover Dam Run welcomed a total of ninety-five competitors to the Civic Centre and the starting point at the nearby oval track. Shortly after 10 a.m. the ten younger competitors took off on their one-kilometre untimed run and at 11:00 the 85 competitors began together for their 5-kilometre and 10-kilometre runs.
They ran out School Street, turned right onto West Riverside Drive, and ran until they reached Fred Tribe Road - the former Trans Canada Highway below Andover. Then they came back north on Tribe Road and turned right on Fort Road until the school road brought them back to the Civic Centre. Depending on whether they were in the 5-km or the 10-km competition, runners would repeat all or part of the course.
Part of the Run New Brunswick series, the Oct. 4 Dam Run saw Dean Stowbridge of Willow Grove, NB make the best 10K time in the male section and Susan Plissey of Woodstock win over all the females at that distance. In the 5-kilometre run, Gary Allan won for the males and Sarah MacPherson of Fredericton in the female section.
Jason Walsh, Perth-Andover Rec Director, said the race becomes more popular every year. "It was our biggest run yet," he said Monday morning. "We had over 95 participants. We had 85 registered in the 5K and the 10K run and last year we only had 70 in those two, so if that continues to grow that's great. The weather was great. With the bass tournament on, we had a lot of people in the area. The course was a little more challenging than years before. In general it was a really good run and went smoothly. We hope to next year have an even bigger crowd."
The runners competed for medals, trophies and plaques in age and gender categories - females 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 and males in the same categories in both the 5k and 10k races. For full race results go to the website http://www.anb.ca.
