Deadline extended for input to proposed changes to N.S. school board governance

HALIFAX - Nova Scotia's education minister has extended the deadline for public input on school board governance.
Karen Casey says the consultation period, originally set to close at the end of this week, has been extended until Sept. 2.
Casey has said she plans to amend the Education Act during the fall sitting of the legislature.
Proposed changes include a standardized code of ethics and more power for school boards to discipline individual members.
Casey promised to update the disciplinary regime after she disbanded the Halifax regional board in 2006 and the Strait regional board in June.
The decision to extend the deadline follows criticism earlier this month from NDP education critic Percy Paris, who said three weeks wasn't enough time to gather feedback.
