Canadian David Veilleux wins cycling Tour of Pennsylvania

PITTSBURGH - Canadian David Veilleux won the 676-kilometre Tour of Pennsylvania cycling race from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh that concluded Sunday by 12 seconds, a margin largely gained by his Stage 5 victory the day before.
That 146-kilometre stage ran from Latrobe to Pittsburgh's South Side with Amos, Que., native Keven Lacombe stepping aside to allow the 20-year-old Veilleux, his teammate, to don the yellow jersey as the overall leader by five seconds.
Veilleux, of Cap-Rouge, Que., increased that lead during Sunday's weather-shortened criterium, won by Daniel Holloway. Heavy rain and wind led to numerous crashes in a late-afternoon race through downtown Pittsburgh that was reduced from 33 laps, or 50 miles, to 24 laps.
After a 20-minute weather delay, only about half the field of 82 finished.
Veilleux's final time was 14 hours, 43 minutes and 24 seconds, or 12 seconds faster than runner-up Christoff Van Heerden. Stefano Barberi finished third, 18 seconds behind Veilleux.
The cross-state race for cyclists 24 and younger was worth US$150,000.
