Wong wins men's all around title at Canadian gymnastics championship

CALGARY - Adam Wong won the men's all around title on Thursday in front of a hometown crowd at the Canadian gymnastics championship.
Wong, who has battled back from a torn Achilles injury he suffered in March 2007, topped the field with a score of 90.55 points. David Kikuchi of Fall River, N.S., was second with 89.45 points and Casey Sandy of Burlington, Ont., was third at 88.85. Wong was consistent, finishing no lower than fifth on any of the six apparatus and winning both pommel horse and high bar.
Kikuchi, last year's all around champion, praised Wong for his hard work and determination in reaching the top of the podium again.
"This was just a great result for him after such a serious injury," said Kikuchi.
In the women's competition, Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs of Toronto placed first with 57.900 points, overtaking first-day leader and defending around champion Kristina Vaculik of Whitby, Ont., who finished second at 57.200.
Hopfner-Hibbs won on vault, beam and uneven bars while Vaculik topped the field on floor.
Peng-Peng Lee of Toronto was third at 56.200 in her first national championships at the senior level.
In the women's junior all around competition Dominique Pegg of Sarnia, Ont., finished first with 55.700 points, followed by Anysia Unick of Calgary at 55.650 and Ti Liu of Montreal at 54.300.
The top eight on each apparatus for both men and women qualified for Saturday's event finals.
